N2 - The dissertation at hand elaborately addresses the influence of alchemical body of thought on Joseph Beuys’ creative work, which has only been sparsely dealt with in secondary literature recently. The focus of the considerations is lying on the “Block Beuys” in the State Museum of Darmstadt, most probably the most extensive one of the space installations realised by the artist. Following the introductory description evidence is given that the installation features formal analogies to the Christian sanctuary, the chambers of art and miracles of the 16th to the 18th century, as well as to the use of form by the artistic avant-gardes of the 20th century. All these kinds of cultural relinquishing bear an affinity towards the occult. A first essential insight of this work is that Beuys’ perception of Christianity as well as his concept of science and art is deeply shaped by Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy: consequently his art must be approached as a manifestation of a world view shaped by occultism. The idea of anthroposophy as an occult doctrine has evolved from Steiner’s reception of Goethe’s writings. Particularly his considerations on metamorphosis, however, update alchemical patterns of thought. Steiner’s anthroposophy and Goethe’s doctrine of metamorphosis are those mediating authorities by which Beuys got into contact with alchemical ideas. The alchemical transmutation, Goethe’s metamorphosis and Joseph Beuys’ “plastic theory” share a basic concept. They perceive life as a continuous process of a dynamic balance between polar principles aiming at its higher development. In this process man ascends to perfecting nature, which metamorphoses into the indefinite. As a redeemer of nature degenerating to matter man redeems himself - the alchemist as well as the artist of Beuys’ kind substituting Jesus Christ’s act of redemption. Against the background of an extended presentation of the historical development of alchemy the dissertation shows by selected examples how essential theorems of historical alchemy are reflected in the “Beuys-Block” and are updated using the formal means of the art of the avant-gardes. The elaborations conclude with the evidence that not only solitary works from the Darmstadt installation reflect a basic link with the principal ideas of alchemy, but that the entire “Beuys-Block” must be considered as a manifestation of an occultist world view, which is decisively alchemically shaped.
