Geschmacksstrategien.

Wer kocht? Was bleibt? Was kocht er? Was kocht er wo?
The thesis entitled Taste Strategies: Cooking as an artistic practice as demonstrated by Rirkrit Tiravanija is an analysis of Rirkrit Tiravanija's (*1961) art - primarily his cooking projects, which he has been presenting in museums and galleries since the late 1980s. Tiravanija's art is a matter of taste in the truest sense of the word. This thesis will, therefore, examine the sense of taste as a means of judging art, from various angles: such as from the physiological and sociological perspective and in terms of aesthetic philosophy - always by reference to academic discourses on art and the perception and theory of art. Seven key questions provide a unifying thread: Why does he cook? Who does he cook for? How and where does he cook? Who cooks? What is left? What does he cook? What does he cook where? The questions open up areas that give an insight into how taste and art are judged, the transience of art and critical attitudes towards institutions. The thesis also enters into cultural and post-colonial discourses: these concern the handling of cultural and 'culinary' identity, perceptions of authenticity, taste cultures as well as social and cultural difference. The discourses invite us to see Tiravanija's culinary artwork through different eyes. Thus, a completely new image of this artist and his work emerges, throwing new light onto previous perceptions of his work and allowing it to be reassessed.
