Die vorliegende Analyse zeitgenössischer urbaner Räume untersucht an ausgewählten Raumbildern des Städtischen, wie in diesen imaginäre Kräfte wirksam werden. Der Begriff des Raumbilds hat unterschiedliche Bedeutungen. Zum einen bezeichnet er die Raummetaphern, also Sprachbilder des Räumlichen. Hinzu kommt die mediale Vermittlung in nichtverbalen Zeichen- und Symbolsystemen, die wiederum Bilder von Räumen entwerfen, die in besonderer Weise auf die Raumvorstellungen und die realen Räume zurückwirken. Zum anderen bezeichnet der Begriff des Raumbilds die symbolische Anordnung materialisierter Umwelten. Im ersten Abschnitt wird ausgehend von Henri Lefèbvres Raum- und Stadttheorie am Beispiel der „Welt als Stadt” das Sprachbild, die Denkfigur und die Bildformel untersucht. Der Begriff der Stadt wird in unterschiedlichen historischen Kontexten analysiert. Im zweiten Abschnitt steht die symbolische Bedeutung von Raumbildern, ihr projektiver Charakter hinsichtlich der Perspektiven städtischer Entwicklung als auch ihre psychische Wirkmächtigkeit und ihr Einfluss auf alltägliche urbane Erfahrungen im Fokus der Analyse. Die Themenparks der neugegründeten chinesischen Stadt Shenzhen, die Raumentwicklung im Kern Europas mit ihrer nahezu gesamtterritorialen Urbanisierung sind ebenso Gegenstand wie die Neukonfiguration des Städtischen in globalen Netzwerken. Um das in den zeitgenössischen Formen der Urbanisierung wirksam werdende Imaginäre als produktive, verändernde Kraft erfassen zu können, wird die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Städtischen, sei es in Architektur, Literatur, Film oder bildender Kunst, einbezogen. Ausgehend von Cornelius Castoriadis’ Theorie des Imaginären als einer schöpferischen Kraft, die neue gesellschaftliche Sinnhorizonte eröffnet, zeigt die Untersuchung des urbanen Imaginären neue Perspektiven zum Verständnis der gegenwärtigen Urbanisierung auf.

The City and Its Imaginary: Urban Spatial Images. This analysis of contemporary urban spaces uses selected spatial images of urbanized territories to investigate how the powers of imagination can affect them. The term “spatial image” can have different meanings. For one, it describes metaphors about space, or verbal images of space. In addition, there is media communication in non-verbal systems of signs and symbols, which in turn create images of spaces, and, in special ways, these can have a retroactive effect on ideas of space, as well as real spaces. The term can also describe the symbolic order of materialized environments. In the first section, Henri Lefèbvre’s theory of space and the city—using the example of the “world as city”—is employed to examine the metaphor, the figure of thought, and the visual formula. The idea of the city is analyzed in various historical contexts. In the second section, the symbolic significance of spatial images and their projective character as regards the perspectives of urban development, as well as their psychological effectiveness and their influence on everyday urban experience are the focus of the analysis. Theme parks in the newly founded Chinese city of Shenzhen and the spatial development at the core of Europe—with most of its territory already urbanized—are also explored, as is the new configuration of cities in global networks. In order to be able to comprehend the imaginary, which affects contemporary forms of urbanization, as a productive, diversifying force, this publication also takes a look at artistic examinations of the urban, whether in architecture, literature, film, or the visual arts. Based on Cornelius Castoriadis’s theory of the imaginary as a creative force, which opens up new horizons of meaning for society, this investigation of the urban imaginary calls attention to new perspectives that are necessary to understand today’s process of urbanization.
