"So all these different things are scuplture."

The oeuvre of Terry Fox (1943-2008) eludes common categories in art history. Beginning in the late 1960s Terry Fox favored an artistic way of working and living that allowed him, both in everyday life and in museum spaces, to continuously experiment with his most important materials: sound and language. Terry Fox and some of his fellow artists were critical of the terms performance and body art that emerged in the 1970s. The artists of the San Francisco Bay Area searched for alternative exhibition opportunities (i.a., Museum of Conceptual Art/MOCA, San Francisco) and used transatlantic means of communication (e.g., art magazines such as Avalanche). Terry Fox questioned and broadened the meaning of sculpture and subsequently described his actions as situations. These developments are retraced through the stations and traces of his nomadic life in Europe and the United States. The beginnings of his artistic path until the end of the 1970s have gone largely unexplored until this point. This period is considered in relation to the complete oeuvre. Moreover, the question is pursued of what can be understood as a single art work within his multifaceted, in part ephemeral estate. Thus, a critical examination of the possibilities and limitations of a Catalogue raisonné is inevitable. Since Terry Fox especially described his actions and situations in detail, his statements and texts are focused on in a dialogic structure. Artists’ texts, stories and anecdotes are examined in relation to their status within the oeuvre and regarding their value for a narrative broadening of the concept 'Catalogue raisonné.' In doing so, there is an artist to be discovered who worked on the margins of the art system developing a
